Setting Up a Home Office on a Budget

A home office does not need a full furniture budget to feel like a real workspace — the two upgrades that change a desk setup the most are lighting and something soft underfoot, and neither is expensive.

Overhead light alone tends to be flat and tiring by mid-afternoon. A single warm-toned desk lamp positioned to one side, angled to avoid screen glare, does more for a long work session than any monitor arm or ergonomic chair.

A rug or a handwoven throw over a hard chair back changes how a corner feels almost immediately — it is a small, low-cost signal that a space was set up on purpose rather than improvised the morning of a video call.

Beyond that, resist buying storage before you know what you actually need to store. Live with the setup for two weeks, then buy exactly the shelf or drawer that solves the specific clutter you have — not the one that looked good in a photo.
